Turkey Day approaching

Wow. I'm a slacker. I haven't posted in over a month. Opps. I think I'd better get into a formal blogging schedule for myself, like my good friend, Miss Bibliophile.

My question for you is this: Is there any holiday where it is acceptable to eat meat off of a plate with a picture of the living animal on it?

As I walked through Macys several weeks ago, I spotted a Martha Stewart platter in their seasonal housewares aisle. Cute! I thought. Then, as I walked closer, I realized the irony of it. Let's serve and eat the dead carcass of an animal using a platter with a picture of the living animal on it. I don't know about you, but at Easter, we never use a platter with an image of a pig on it to serve the ham, and we certainly don't use anything depicting cattle for our Christmas roast beef tradition. I suppose this irony has fallen on thousands of other people, so I can't really claim to be that clever. And this actually isn't Martha's fault, thousands of retailers depict beautiful turkeys in their fall houseware goods. Doesn't it seem wrong? Disrespectful?

And speaking of eating animals... at trivia this past Wednesday, one of the final questions was to name a bird that get eaten in Britain once a year by the royal family. For some reason, I thought the answer was peacock. Peacock. Never have I even heard of serving peacock, but I imagined rich wealthy people wanting to eat something more beautiful than duck. The answer was a swan. Boy did I feel silly.
